Ingredients
Scale
Bread & Spread
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough or sandwich bread)
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
Filling
- 1/4 cup marinara or pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 12 slices pepperoni
Seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Prep the Bread: Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice, ensuring it’s evenly covered for maximum crispiness.
- Begin Building the Sandwiches: Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, onto a skillet or griddle preheated over medium heat.
- Add Marinara: Spread half of the marinara sauce over each bread slice that’s in the skillet. This will create a saucy base for your fillings.
- Layer the Fillings: Top each sauced slice with 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, followed by 6 slices of pepperoni. Sprinkle with dried oregano and a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like some heat.
- Top and Close: Spread the remaining marinara sauce on the non-buttered side of the two remaining bread slices. Place these on top of the filled sandwiches, sauce side down and buttered side facing up.
- Grill to Perfection: Cook the sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey inside.
- Slice and Serve: Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot. Enjoy as is or with extra marinara sauce for dipping!
Notes
- For extra crispiness, try using a cast-iron skillet.
- Swap in turkey pepperoni or make it vegetarian by using your favorite veggie pizza toppings.
- Add a little garlic powder or Italian seasoning for extra flavor in the butter.
- Best enjoyed fresh off the skillet when cheese is melty.
