This easy, one-pan dish delivers a perfect balance of sweet and savory, ideal for serving over steaming hot rice.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Chicken
- ½ kilo (about 1.1 lb) chicken pieces
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
For the Sauce
- 2 cups Sprite (or any lemon-lime soda)
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
To Season
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- Salt, to taste
Instructions
- Sauté aromatics: In a large pan or skillet over medium heat, add a small amount of oil. Sauté the sliced onion and minced garlic, cooking for about 2–3 minutes until fragrant and the onions become slightly translucent.
- Brown the chicken: Add the chicken pieces to the pan in a single layer. Cook, turning occasionally, until the pieces are lightly browned on all sides, about 5–7 minutes.
- Add the Sprite: Pour in the Sprite (or lemon-lime soda), ensuring the chicken is mostly submerged. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Add sauces and season: Stir in the oyster sauce and soy sauce, mixing well to coat all the chicken pieces. Season with a little salt and ground black pepper to taste.
- Simmer and cook through: Lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pan, and let the chicken cook for 15–20 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
- Reduce the sauce: Remove the lid and continue to simmer the chicken for a few minutes, uncovered, until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly to your desired consistency.
- Serve: Serve the chicken hot with steamed rice, spooning the sweet and savory sauce over the top.
Notes
- You can use bone-in or boneless chicken pieces—adjust cooking time as needed.
- Feel free to add sliced bell peppers or chili for extra flavor and color.
- Diet soda can be substituted for a lower sugar option, but the flavor may differ.
- For a richer sauce, stir in a teaspoon of butter before serving.
