- 1 loaf Italian bread (16 oz), sliced in half lengthwise
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- ½ cup water
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the bread halves on a baking sheet, cut side up. Brush each with olive oil.
- Bake for 5–7 minutes until lightly toasted.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is soft.
- Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, water, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens.
- Spread the Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over the toasted bread halves.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake for another 10 minutes or until bubbly and cheese is melted.
- Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Slice and serve hot.
Notes
- Use French bread as a substitute if Italian bread isn’t available.
- Can be prepped ahead and baked just before serving.
