Crispy Amish onion fritters—golden, savory, and nostalgic—make the perfect quick appetizer or side dish with simple, hearty ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 2/3 cup whole milk

  • 2 cups white onions, chopped (about 1 medium onion)

  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

  • Oil for frying, as needed

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and milk until smooth.

  • Stir in chopped onions, then season with salt and pepper.

  • Heat 1/2-inch oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F.

  • Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, flatten slightly, and fry until golden brown on both sides.

  • Remove fritters and drain on paper towels.

  • Serve hot as a side or appetizer.

Notes

  • Best served fresh for optimal crispiness.
  • Add chopped chives or herbs for a flavor twist.
  • Use a thermometer to keep oil temp steady for even cooking.
